Registration for “Advocacy Bootcamp,” ISMA’s advocacy leadership training program, closes next week!
This hybrid program is for more than just experienced physician advocates -- it is designed for physicians who have never been involved in advocacy but are eager to make a difference. We aim to foster and sustain physician advocacy champions who become effective and active health policy advocates.
Joining the bootcamp program is a small commitment with the potential for significant change. This past legislative session, ISMA’s physician advocacy efforts led to major wins, including:
- Increasing ALL Medicaid reimbursement rates to equal Medicare for physician practices.
- Adopting first-in-the-nation legislation eliminating noncompete clauses for primary care physician employment and reserving specialty titles for physicians only.
- In conjunction with the Indiana Physician Coalition, defeating nurse practitioners and other nonphysician practitioners who attempted to expand their scope of practice.
- Securing nearly $20 million in GME funding for Indiana residency programs for the next two years.
Additional legislative victories are detailed
here.
Topics that will be covered during the bootcamp include how policy is made in Indiana; the anatomy of the federal and state legislatures; how to track bills; how to navigate the Indiana General Assembly website; frameworks for policy analysis; aspects of strategy when lobbying; self-awareness and self-management when meeting with legislators; and how to prepare for meetings with policymakers.
Zoom or in-person sessions led by ISMA’s Government Relations (GR) team and other subject-matter experts will take place one day each month from October 2023 through May 2024. Participants will also take part in Physician Advocacy Day at the Statehouse in January. The cost for the bootcamp is $500 and
registration is open until Oct. 16. The program will be limited to 25 members and up to 10.0 CME credits will be offered for participating
ALL ISMA members are welcome to participate. If you’re unable to attend one of the virtual sessions, ISMA staff will assist you in making it up.
