The Opioid Epidemic: Impact on Peri-Operative Care

While chairing the ACS Legislative Committee, Dr. Selzer developed a strong interest in the impact of the opioid epidemic on the United States and the role surgeons could play in addressing it. He has published articles on the topic in the ACS Bulletin and led the team of surgeons who crafted the “ACS Statement on the Opioid Epidemic,” published in the August 2017 issue. He also chaired the Advocacy and Health Policy Committee of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. Now, as the president of the Indiana Chapter of the ACS, Dr. Selzer is working to inform Hoosier surgeons about the opioid epidemic and how to help prevent opioid dependency in post-surgical patients and those suffering traumatic injury.
Objectives:
At the end of this webinar, attendees should be able to:
- Conduct candid pre-operative discussions with patients about post-procedure pain, to set expectations and assess the risk for opioid misuse
- Recognize the benefit of using INSPECT as part of routine post-operative practice
- Identify peri-operative pain management strategies for inpatients and outpatients
- Summarize ACS advocacy efforts in response to opioid abuse
