Take your medical career to the next level with ISMA's Physician Leadership Program
ISMA is excited to offer two opportunities for physicians to advance their careers through the new Physician Leadership Program. Faculty from IU Executive Education at the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs will lead one three-month program beginning Nov. 22 and another beginning Jan. 10.

The Physician Leadership Program is open to all physicians looking to further their career by strengthening their leadership skills or moving into a leadership role. Each session features three virtual classes and two in-person classes at ISMA’s office in Indianapolis. The program is funded through a generous grant from the Physicians Foundation.

Details about program dates, courses and enrollment for both sessions can be found at www.ismanet.org/leadership.

CME Coordinator Jessica Davis recently answered a few questions about the Physician Leadership Program.

Why do physicians need leadership skills?
Jessica Davis: In 2016, an AMA study found less than half of practicing physicians in the U.S. were independent physicians with a majority ownership in their medical practices. That means a majority are employed physicians at hospitals or large medical groups. In the past, hospitals looked for physicians with strong clinical skills. Now, the focus has turned to physician leaders with exceptional people skills who are capable of communicating effectively and building trust across multidisciplinary groups. Physicians are more engaged and more interested in leadership roles.

Also, ISMA is committed to equipping physicians to navigate industry changes successfully. Management training and knowledge of leadership principles are now important ingredients for success.

Why are you excited about the Physician Leadership Program?
Davis: We are very excited to partner with IU Executive Education at the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Also, the blended learning format gives participants the opportunity to develop relationships, experience teamwork and collaborate in our onsite courses and to engage in live, interactive education from the comfort of their homes or offices in our virtual courses. Finally, in addition to having the chance to earn 18.0 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM, participants who complete the program will receive a Physician Leadership Certificate from IU Executive Education.

What are two things you hope participants will learn?
Davis: Program graduates will have a better understanding of how leadership can influence and set the culture of an organization. They will also have an increased self-awareness and be equipped with the skills needed to serve as a transformational leader.
