It was another record-breaking year for Match Day. The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) announced the results of the 2026 Main Residency Match®, the largest in the organization’s history, with over 53,000 applicants registered and more than 44,000 residency positions offered in over 6,800 program tracks across the U.S.
Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) congratulated 343 fourth-year medical students who successfully matched (97%) with residency programs on Match Day 2026. While Marian University’s Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-WCOM) class of 2026 announced 148 matched (100%) students. The total of 491, with an additional 333 more joining IU residency programs from 134 different medical schools, makes this year’s totals the highest in Indiana history.
According to Jay L. Hess, MD, PhD, MHSA, executive vice president for university clinical affairs and dean of the IUSM, students matched with training programs across 37 states. Of the 343 matched, 98 will enter IUSM residency programs. In all, 115 of the recent graduates will be staying in Indiana to complete their training.
For MU-WCOM, they matched 100% of students for the second consecutive year. All 148 graduates are set to begin training this summer; 37% are staying in Indiana. 57 students entered residency in the immediate surrounding states.
“So many of you at ISMA have become great friends and mentors,” said Wyatt Reed. “I have matched at my number one program in interventional radiology at Mount Sinai in New York City. I’ll be around for one more year to do my third year.”
Meghann Roessler, who has been active in MSS at ISMA, will be staying in state.
“I was ecstatic when I opened my match letter and saw I’d be continuing my training with the Community East Family Medicine Residency program,” she said. “Getting to celebrate with my friends and family on Match Day was an unforgettable experience and a great reminder to be proud of myself for the hard work over the past 4 years.”
