Annual retreat brings together women in medicine
What’s the best advice you ever received? For some attending ISMA’s Women in Medicine Retreat on Saturday, it was: “Don’t put up with crazy people – they’ll introduce you to their friends.” “ABG – Always be growing.”  And, “You’re replaceable at work, but not replaceable at home.”

The physicians, medical students and guest speakers at the Bottleworks Hotel in Indianapolis shared professional wisdom, too: “Medicine has evolved, and we have to relearn, rethink and go down new paths.” “I can connect with my patients because they’re humans, and doctors are human, too.” “Don’t worry about being sued; it’s going to happen, so move on.”

The interaction with other women physicians earned top reviews from participants, as did the event’s speakers. Executive leadership coach and author Lisa Herbert, MD, presented on becoming a leader and advocate and influencing change by being self-aware and engaging others. Keynote speaker Kristina Box, MD, Indiana state health commissioner, shared insights on leading change and achieving results, while Georgiana Reynal, chief advocacy officer at Ascension St. Vincent, explained the state and federal legislative processes and how physician advocates can make Indiana a better place for physicians and patients. Ninya Bostic, director of health policy and advocacy for Johnson & Johnson, discussed the company’s advocacy on behalf of patients.

ISMA would like to thank Shepherd Financial, which sponsored the reception, as well as the Physicians Foundation and the Indiana Medical Foundation for sponsoring the 2023 Women in Medicine Retreat.
