Indiana physicians win state, U.S. offices in midterm election
By Grant Achenbach
ISMA Director of Government Relations

Congratulations to four Indiana physicians who were elected or re-elected to state and national offices on Tuesday.

ISMA member Brad Barrett, MD, of Richmond, was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives, as was Rita Fleming, MD, of Jeffersonville. Tim Brown MD, of Crawfordsville, was re-elected to the Indiana House, while Larry Bucshon, MD, won re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. While he did not prevail, Don Westerhausen, MD, of South Bend, ran a competitive race for the Indiana House.

These results are encouraging for any physician interested in running for elected office. As respected leaders of communities across the state, physicians are in a unique position to serve Hoosiers in many ways, including public service.

With that being said, any level of involvement in the legislative process can make an impact on the future of medicine in our state. As we approach the upcoming 2019 session of the Indiana General Assembly, please don’t hesitate to contact ISMA if you have questions or would like to get involved.
