Indiana Medicaid reimburses providers for COVID-19 vaccine counseling
As part of the effort to increase vaccination rates among Indiana Medicaid recipients, the Indiana Health Coverage Programs (IHCP) will reimburse providers for providing COVID-19 vaccine information and/or education to members.

The IHCP will cover procedure code 99401, “Preventive medicine counseling and/or risk factor reduction intervention(s) provided to an individual (separate procedure); approximately 15 minutes,” effective for dates of service on or after Nov. 2, 2021. This service is reimbursable even if a member decides against vaccination after counseling.

Medical providers may bill the IHCP for vaccine counseling if it takes place virtually via telehealth. If the counseling results in a vaccination, the provider may bill separately for the administration of the vaccine.

Additional information and reimbursement details are available in this Nov. 2 IHCP provider bulletin.
