Evan Bartel, JD, has joined the ISMA staff as general counsel. He joins the association after serving as general counsel and deputy director of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA) since February 2022.
Bartel has over a decade of experience as an attorney and is an expert in litigation, litigation management, and government administration. Among his numerous duties with IPLA, Bartel led a team of 105 in processing license applications and conducting disciplinary hearings.
In addition to his general counsel work at ISMA, Bartel will help oversee the association’s Physician Assistance Program in his new role.
“Evan brings a wealth of knowledge to the ISMA from his years working for the state, including the Professional Licensing Agency,” ISMA Executive Vice President Julie Reed, JD, said. “His reputation as an effective, solutions-oriented leader will serve the association well as we continue to find new ways to serve our members and fulfill our mission.”
Reed said ISMA staff have interacted with Bartel numerous times over the years via the Medical Licensing Board, and that he played an instrumental role in helping IPLA navigate COVID-related challenges and implementing significant modernization efforts at the agency.
Before working for the IPLA, Bartel was deputy general counsel for the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. He has also worked in legal roles for the Indiana Attorney General’s Office and the Indiana Department of Revenue.
“Working as a regulator for health care practitioners has been a rewarding experience, and I look forward to viewing the practice of medicine from a different angle,” Bartel said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Indiana’s fantastic community of physicians.”
