The
Indiana Health Alert Network (IHAN) has been sending out emails about measles. According to the Indiana Department of Health, they are hearing from
individuals with measles that they have more family members at home with symptoms, so the current case count does not fully reflect the picture.
“Clinicians should consider screening for measles more proactively. In every instance of positive measles cases, they knew they had been exposed and likely had it,” Secretary of Health Lindsay Weaver, MD, said. “Despite this, it had been missed by a couple of healthcare providers, which led to some exposures. I do believe it could’ve been mitigated by proactively asking, 'Do you suspect you have measles or have you been exposed to measles?' ”
Information about testing and vaccination can be found on
IDOH website. Physicians must call IDOH when they suspect a measles case. According to IDOH, they have had some instances of delay in notifying IDOH, which delayed the opportunity to intervene and offer prophylaxis to other exposed individuals when appropriate.
