PLENARY SESSION 3:
SESSION TITLE: Building a Resilient Physician Workforce: Leadership, Strategy, and Well-Being in a Changing Healthcare Landscape
SESSION DESCRIPTION:
Physicians, hospitals, and health systems are navigating a period of significant change in health care, shaped by financial pressures, workforce shortages, evolving regulations, and an increasingly complex policy environment. These forces affect how care is delivered, how physicians practice, and how organizations support the clinicians who are essential to patient care.
At the same time, physicians across all stages of their careers continue to report high levels of burnout, emotional strain, and growing concerns about long-term sustainability in the profession. Strengthening the healthcare workforce requires thoughtful collaboration between physicians and health system leaders to address these challenges in ways that support both high-quality care and clinician well-being.
This session will explore how hospitals and health systems are working to better support physicians through strategic workforce planning, improved access to mental health and wellness resources, and leadership development opportunities that elevate physician voices in organizational decision-making. Drawing on insights from Indiana health care leaders and national physician well-being initiatives, the presentation will highlight practical approaches that can reduce stigma around seeking support, promote sustainable resilience, and create practice environments where physicians are valued and heard.
By aligning workforce strategy with physician well-being and leadership development, health care organizations can build cultures that support long-term engagement, professional fulfillment, and retention—while ensuring that physicians remain central to shaping the future of care delivery.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the current challenges affecting the physician workforce and the healthcare environment, including financial pressures, policy changes, and the ongoing impact of burnout.
- Describe strategic actions hospitals and health systems are taking to strengthen the physician workforce pipeline, improve retention, and support physician well-being.
- Identify opportunities for physicians to engage in leadership and organizational decision-making to help guide their organizations through ongoing change.
