Program description:

The opioid epidemic has broadly impacted communities and healthcare systems. As morbidity and mortality rates from opioid use have increased, so have hospital admissions. Complications of drug use may lead to complex and prolonged hospitalizations. Hospitalization is a reachable moment and an important opportunity to increase access to opioid use disorder (OUD) management, treatment, and harm reduction for patients. Inpatient acute care environments are uniquely positioned to help patients with substance use disorders during hospitalization. This session will help providers leverage a patient’s time in the hospital setting to address OUD.

Objectives:

At the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the scope of the opioid epidemic as it pertains to the hospital setting.
  • Describe current models for improved care of hospitalized patients with OUD and implementing harm reduction at the bedside.
  • Identify current treatment of opioid use disorder.
  • Develop competence in Buprenorphine induction and maintenance.

Speaker:

Amy LaHood, MD
Family Medicine Specialist
Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital

About our speaker:

Dr. LaHood graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago before completing a family medicine residency and a fellowship in maternal child health. She started her practice by working at an Indianapolis Community Health Center from 2000to 2005 and then spent 17 years as family medicine faculty. Dr. LaHood has a passion for population and public health. As faculty, she developed one of the first Indiana programs promoting opioid prescribing safeguards for chronic pain and subsequently dedicated extensive time advocating for safer opioid prescribing throughout Indiana and on a national level.

From 2018 to 2021, Dr. LaHood directed a program to treat patients with opioid use disorder and became board certified in addiction medicine. She continues working throughout Indiana to educate physicians about the benefits and risks of opioids, as well as the most effective ways to reduce harm and save lives for individuals with substance use disorders. In January 2023, Dr. LaHood joined Community Health Network as part-time addiction medicine faculty.
