About the Speaker:

Stacy L. Cook, JD, is a partner in the Health Care Department and a member of the Data Security and Privacy Practice Group at Barnes & Thornburg LLP. She concentrates her practice on regulatory and transactional issues, including fraud and abuse laws, billing and reimbursement, HIPAA compliance and related litigation matters. Cook was an associate and partner at Barnes & Thornburg for more than 10 years before returning in June 2018 after almost two and a half years as ISMA general counsel.

Cook represents health care providers before state and federal regulatory agencies and assists clients in responding to privacy and security breaches, government investigations and audits, repayment inquiries and internal audits. She advises clients in virtually all aspects of HIPAA compliance, including drafting policies and procedures, drafting and negotiating business associate agreements, handling breaches and defending clients in Office for Civil Rights investigations.

Cook is a member of the American Society of Medical Association Counsel, the Indiana State Bar Association, the Indianapolis Bar Association and the Indiana Security and Privacy Network.

Program Description:

Several new requirements related to INSPECT, Indiana’s prescription drug monitoring program, take effect in 2019. In this webinar, an experienced health care attorney will review the latest requirements and answer frequently asked questions. She will review SEA 221, which requires anyone holding an Indiana controlled substance registration (CSR) to have registered with INSPECT by Jan. 1, 2019, and requires all CSR holders, at various times before 2021, to begin checking INSPECT when prescribing opioids or benzodiazepines. She’ll also discuss SEA 225, which requires all physicians applying for or renewing a CSR to have completed two hours of CME on the topic of opioid prescribing and abuse.

Learning Objectives: 

At the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

• Comprehend the newest requirements related to INSPECT.
• Understand Indiana’s new CME requirements for opioid education.
• Understand requirements in other opioid prescribing laws.
• Mitigate the potential for non-compliance.
