About the Speaker:

Krista Brucker, MD, is a faculty member at the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Emergency Medicine and works in the ED at Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis. Dr. Brucker was recently named a 2018 Health Care Hero by the Indianapolis Business Journal. Her research focuses on mental health and substance abuse treatment in the ED. Her current work includes the design and implementation of Project POINT.

Program Description:

Emergency departments (EDs) in Indiana have seen a dramatic increase in the need for opioid-related services over the past five years. ISMA President John P. McGoff, MD, a practicing emergency medicine physician in Indianapolis, has noted that he treats an overdose patient during every shift.  These patients come from all walks of life and are our families, friends and neighbors.  The good news is that Hoosier health care professionals and organizations are working hard to turn the tide. Webinar participants will hear from IU School of Medicine’s Krista Brucker, MD, and learn about a collaborative model for preventing recurring overdoses by ED patients who misuse opioids and what makes the program successful, as well as lessons learned and plans for the future.

Objectives:

At the end of this webinar, participants should be able to:

• Comprehend the dramatic increase in the need for opioid-related emergency medical services over the past five years
• Understand what makes Project POINT an innovative approach to treating opioid overdose patients cared for in the ED, including how IEMS’ relationship with the public safety community, local emergency departments and local and state governments make Project POINT effective
• Comprehend Project POINT’s design, implementation and evaluation processes, as well as overdose patients’ interest in engaging with the outreach team on various levels
• Appreciate lessons learned, as well as plans to improve initial evaluation of patients who misuse opioids and link them more efficiently with ongoing care
