Program description:

 

“Advocacy Bootcamp” is ISMA’s advocacy leadership training program.  This hybrid program aims to support and develop active, effective health policy advocates from among ISMA’s most engaged members.

Some of the topics that will be covered include - how policy is made in Indiana, anatomy of the federal and state legislatures, how to track bills, how to navigate the Indiana General Assembly website, framework of policy analysis, aspects of strategy when lobbying, self-awareness and self-management when meeting with legislators, and how to prepare for meetings with policymakers.

Zoom, in-person, and recorded sessions led by ISMA’s Government Relations (GR) team and other subject-matter experts will take place one day each month from October 2024 through April 2025.  Participants will also take part in Physician Advocacy Day at the Statehouse in February.

Tuesday, Oct. 15
6 – 7 p.m. ET via Zoom

Physician Advocacy Recruit Orientation

  • Understand how policy is made in Indiana.
  • Explain the anatomy of the federal and state legislatures.
  • Describe how to track bills.
  • Know how physicians can participate in the process.


Friday, Nov. 22

  • Understand the framework of policy analysis.

  • Know how to build relationships with your Legislators.
  • Prepare to educate and establish creditability before Constituent engagement.
  • Review ISMA Grass Root efforts through the “Action Center” and send an email to Legislators.

  • Describe a framework for better self-awareness and self-management.

  • Explain blind spots and pitfalls of the various personality styles we inherently possess.

Physician Advocacy Operational Readiness

  • Know how to prepare for meetings with policy makers.
  • Describe best practices in meetings with policy makers.
  • Role-play a practice meeting.
  • Evaluation and execution of appropriate follow-up to meetings with policy makers.
