2023 MIPS EUC application deadline is April 15

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently reopened the 2023 MIPS Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances (EUC) hardship application due to the Change Healthcare cyberattack. The new deadline to apply for an exemption is April 15, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET.

The hardship application is not automatic and requires physicians to apply. If a physician or practice has already submitted data and would like to take advantage of this flexibility, they must log into the CMS portal and update the submission.

CMS will only approve applications citing the cyberattack as the basis for requesting reweighting under the MIPS EUC Exception. Any applications submitted for reasons outside of the Change Healthcare cyberattack will be denied, CMS announced. Additionally, any data submitted to CMS will override your application for those performance categories.

If a physician or practice wants to remain scored on the 2023 MIPS Program, the extended deadline to submit data remains April 15.
