ISMA Past President George T. Lukemeyer, MD, dies
George T. Lukemeyer, MD, ISMA’s president in 1984, is being remembered for his influence on two generations of physicians. Dr. Lukemeyer, who died Feb. 25 at age 93, was a longtime professor at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSOM) and served 50 years on its admissions committee.

A Bloomington resident who also chaired the academic committee that drafted the “Indiana Plan for Statewide Medical Education,” Dr. Lukemeyer became IUSOM’s associate dean in 1966. He was named executive associate dean and medical director of University Hospitals in March 1972 and retired in 1990.

Dr. Lukemeyer was a third-generation Indiana physician. He leaves behind his wife, Barbara Hayes Lukemeyer; his son, George T. “Deuce” Lukemeyer II (Shelley); his daughter, Anna Lukemeyer; and four grandchildren.

IUSOM has reprinted a 2010 profile of Dr. Lukemeyer on its “Spirit of Medicine” blog, with reminiscences from former students whose careers he helped shape.
