How did you become involved in public speaking?
Once I graduated from residency and began working, I started speaking at local churches and health fairs in an effort to gain more patients and exposure for the clinic as a new provider. As I looked around, I soon realized that my colleagues were doing this professionally and being paid for their time. So, after writing my first book, and then my second, I started using them as a way in the door into the professional speaking realm and began asking for my worth.
How do you balance being a wife, mother, physician, professor, speaker and author?
God and my husband. Truly, having the faith to do it and a phenomenal partner at home who believes in what I do and want to do, are the reasons why I'm able to balance it all. My husband understands when he needs to step in, support and tell me to sit and rest. Working from home two days a week helps tremendously with balancing kids, housework and quiet time, as well. Telemedicine has opened up a new world for me and my family.
Why is physician burnout so prevalent today?
With the rise of physician mental health issues, addiction and suicide in the news and media, we're finally starting to give it the attention it deserves. The question still remains – what are we going to do about it?
What do you hope physicians will gain from your presentation?
The freedom and confidence to say “No” more, to set boundaries, to take breaks, to create life-hacks and to really go for the life they really want to live.
