CDC updates clinical advice for vaping-related lung injuries

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week released new interim clinical guidelines for evaluating and treating cases of e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury (EVALI). This guidance updates an earlier release from the CDC and is based on more recent cases. Twenty-six people from 21 states had died from EVALI as of Oct. 11, according to the CDC. As of Tuesday, three Hoosiers had died.

The new interim guidance covers:

  • Initial clinical evaluation.
  • Suggested criteria for hospital admission and treatment.
  • Patient follow-up.
  • Special considerations for groups at high risk.
  • Clinical and public health recommendations.
