Advocate for your patients by introducing a resolution

Physicians around the state have told the ISMA how pleased they are to have access to the Indiana Scheduled Prescription Electronic Collection and Tracking (INSPECT) database. The program, available to physicians for less than a year, allows access to data that documents dispensing of certain controlled substances.

INSPECT was discussed at the 2005 ISMA House of Delegates through Resolution 05-20. The House adopted the resolution proposing the ISMA “seek legislation that would authorize the Indiana Board of Pharmacy to make data from INSPECT available to physicians and pharmacists licensed in the state of Indiana.”

Resolutions like this one are crucial to the ISMA because they set policy and guide legislative action. Now is the time to put issues important to you into a resolution for the 2008 ISMA Convention, Sept. 19-21.

Here are some guidelines for writing an effective resolution:

  • Determine a clear action or stand you would like the ISMA to take on an issue and the reasons why.
  • Write a short title.
  • Include your name or the names of ISMA members introducing the resolution.
  • Develop one or more “Whereas” statements explaining the issue and why ISMA action is requested.
  • Conclude with one or more “Resolve” statements that must stand alone and say what
you want the ISMA to do in a clear and specific action plan. For example: “Resolved,
that the ISMA support increasing the tax on alcohol with revenue from the tax allocated to improving the health of Hoosiers.”

The ISMA staff will help you prepare a resolution. Call (800) 257-4762 or (317) 261-2060. Only ISMA members may submit resolutions. The deadline is July 21.

Presenting to reference committees
Submitted resolutions are assigned to one of four reference committees. Authors of resolutions are asked to provide additional background information to committee members to explain or support the issue.

Reference committees will meet Saturday morning, Sept. 20. You or a designated representative will be asked to attend and respond to questions. See last year’s resolutions>>
