New Medicaid requirement coming

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued guidance in August regarding use of tamper-resistant prescription pads for ALL prescriptions for Medicaid patients. The requirement takes effect Oct. 1.

A number of states, like Indiana, already require tamper-resistant pads for prescribing controlled substances. However, at presstime, no additional guidance or instructions were issued by Indiana Medicaid about the appropriateness of using currently existing supplies.

A CMS newsletter indicates this guidance does not apply for e-mailed, faxed or verbal prescriptions and does not apply when a managed care organization pays for the prescription.

CMS also has a “Frequently Asked Questions” listing to assist you.

The ISMA will communicate any further instructions regarding this issue via special e-mail. If you have not provided the ISMA with your e-mail address to receive important bulletins, please do so. Simply send an e-mail today to Vicki Riley.
