INSPECT lets you view reports about patients scheduled Rx use

INSPECT is a Web-based system that tracks all schedule II through V controlled substances dispensed in the state — 5 million records a year. It is housed at the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency and is under the direction of the Board of Pharmacy.

If you have a medical license and a CSR number, you are eligible to register for INSPECT. Once registered, you can view reports about patients and their use of controlled substances. You do not
need the patient’s permission to do so; the system is an exception considered treatment under HIPAA. Printed copies of INSPECT reports can become part of a medical record.

Effective July 1, 2007, this system was opened to physicians, action prompted by a 2005 resolution to the ISMA House of Delegates.

For assistance e-mail INSPECT or call (317) 234-4457 or 4458. For a list of scheduled drugs see the sidebar of this e-newsletter.
