Aetna settlement may benefit you

The AMA is encouraging physicians to act early in the new year in response to settlement of a lawsuit involving Aetna. The insurer reached an agreement with state medical societies to pay resubmitted claims for Evaluation and Management visits billed with Modifier 57 (indicating the decision for surgery was made during the visit) for dates of services from Jan. 1, 2005, through Feb. 11, 2006.

A resubmission period began Jan. 1 and will end April 30, 2007. Physicians, in many cases, will be responsible for holding Aetna accountable for these claims payments.

The AMA urges physician practices to scrutinize all claim payments to ensure Aetna adheres to the terms of its settlement agreements.
