The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is preparing to make data about physician financial relationships with drug/device manufacturers open to the public. If you want to review and ensure the correctness of data about you prior to its release – now is the time to act. Data review and submission for the 2013 year ends Aug. 27.
“It is important for physicians to review their reports for accuracy this year, but it will be even more important moving forward,” said Sandy Miller, ISMA director of Practice Management. “The ISMA has learned CMS is proposing that financial relationships between physicians and manufacturers in previously exempted CME activities be reportable events in the Open Payments System beginning in 2015. That means any financial relationship a physician has with manufacturers will be available to the public even if the relationship is for CME activity.”
While the Open Payments registration is now open, Miller noted that any disputes must be initiated by the Aug. 27 deadline, prior to the data being made public Sept. 30.
Begin your review by visiting the physicians educational and resource page on the Open Payments website here.
You’ll see two phases of registration detailed on that web page. You may also find useful an Open Payments Mobile for Physicians free app that will help you track payments and other transfers of value from manufacturers throughout the year. Download it from the Google Play app store or iOSApple app store; search under “Open Payments.”
