The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the NIH, has a host of new, science-based resources to help you manage patients at risk for substance abuse disorders, including prescription drug abuse.

  • ACP Module to Enhance Practice Procedures – NIDA, along with the American College of Physicians (ACP), offers online tools, available at no cost to ACP and non-ACP members. Use these resources to help you with implementation of substance abuse screening. You’ll also find strategies to help you counsel patients appropriately, and provide referrals to care when necessary. Find these free resources (registration required) on the ACP website.
  • Opioid Prescribing Resources – Check out a new web page featuring patient agreement and consent forms, as well as resources for aberrant drug-taking behaviors associated with commonly used long-acting opioids here.
  • Screening, Assessment and Drug Testing Resources – Find additional tools for screening and assessment that serve as guidance for all clinicians on the NIDA website.
