The U.S. Senate passed HR 4213 on March 10, by a vote of 62-36.  The bill includes an amendment that would extend current Medicare physician payment rates until Oct. 1.

The legislation must still go to the House, where further amendments are possible. Even if the bill passes, it has not been determined if the bill extending the freeze to October could be signed before the March 31 expiration of the current patch.

The AMA believes the amendment appears to be a compromise between a year-long extension and another short extension to work on a permanent SGR fix. You are urged to keep up the pressure, especially in the Senate, for enacting legislation to permanently resolve the Medicare physician payment crisis.
