Three years ago, Evansville Pediatric neonatalologist Maria Del Rio Hoover, M.D., and Indianapolis otolaryngologist Heidi Dunniway, M.D., discussed ways to get more female physicians involved in organized medicine. Both physicians are active in the ISMA and understand the importance of having their voices heard.

As the result of their conversation, Dr. Dunniway and Dr. Del Rio Hoover formed the group Women In Medicine, which is now an ad hoc committee. Its mission is to:

  • Increase women’s membership in the ISMA
  • Increase ISMA women’s participation
  • Mentor medical students and young physicians
  • Support each other

“This group provides a unique opportunity for female medical students, residents and physicians to build on our unique perspectives for the good of our patients and our profession,” commented Dr. Dunniway.

“Our agenda is shaped by our members, with the goal of developing a forum for women to mentor and support one another, develop future leaders and become more involved in the future of medicine.”

All ISMA women physicians are invited to the committee’s next meeting Saturday, April 17 in Indianapolis. The day will begin at 10 a.m. with a business meeting and brainstorming session, followed by a luncheon and social time.

“This group is for all women in medicine at any stage of their career,” noted Dr. Dunniway. “Our meeting will be a time of inspiration and relaxation as we explore ways to help our younger colleagues strive to reach their full potential.”
