Are you interested in improving the quality, safety and efficiency of patient care? To advance in these areas, physician practices, hospitals, laboratories and others must participate in information sharing.

The ability to securely transmit information electronically with another physician office or with a hospital or lab is called health information exchange or HIE. Joining an HIE differs from adopting an electronic health record (EHR) or electronic medical record (EMR). EHRs or EMRs provide information to and receive information from HIEs.

The Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ) is partnering with Regenstrief Institute in Indianapolis to better understand the barriers physicians face when seeking to participate in an HIE – and how those barriers might be overcome.

You can help by completing a brief online survey. The first 40 physicians or physician groups to respond to the survey will receive a $10 gift card for McDonald’s. (Respondents will be notified by the site administrator to make arrangements to receive the gift card.)

If your practice or organization currently participates in one of Indiana’s health information exchanges, you can help by identifying the challenges you faced in participating and how you overcame them.

If you do not yet participate in an HIE, help AHRQ and Regenstrief understanding why and what it would take to help you overcome existing barriers.

Physicians and physician groups can complete the survey here.
