ISMA Alliance (ISMA-A) President Cami Pond gave a check for scholarships to IU School of Medicine Dean Craig Brater, M.D. The presentation was made during ISMA’s Medicine Day, Jan. 20.
“In 2009, the average debt of a medical student in our country was $157,067. That meant 11 percent of all students carried a debt in excess of $250,000,” noted Pond. “In a decade that truly needs more primary care physicians, precious few medical graduates can afford to pursue this field.”
The Alliance contributes annually to the medical school through the AMA Foundation. In 2009-2010, the group collected $16,060.25.
Moreover, the ISMA-A joined the North Central Alliances by pledging an additional $10,000 to endow the newly created scholarship Honor Fund.
Pond said, " Thanks to the donations of our members statewide, we can continue our commitment of support to the next generation of caregivers."
