Make sure you’re on schedule for 5010 transaction standards upgrade

Jan. 1, 2012, will ring in more than a new year. It will carry with it new requirements for any practice doing business electronically in any way. The conversion to 5010 transaction standards under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) will occur with the new year.

This process impacts you if you check patient eligibility online, file claims electronically or receive remittance advice through the Internet.

As HIPAA covered entities, health care clearinghouses you may use to help with billing and any payers must comply with version 5010. Have you been in touch with your vendor(s) about their readiness? Contact those who exchange data with you and determine when they will have software upgrades completed and available for testing with you.
