Two things you should know about congressional action to halt the proposed 25 percent Medicare physician payment cut:

Medicine’s not done yet. ISMA physicians need to keep pressure on the new Congress to fix the Sustainable Growth Rate permanently in the next session and not delay until the end of next year.

Second, the bill Congress passed to delay cuts through 2011 does extend payment policies originally set to expire this year, including:

  • The "floor" on geographic adjustments made for the physician work component of the Medicare payment schedule
  • The 5 percent payment increase for certain Medicare mental health services.
  • An exception process for the cap on Medicare outpatient therapy services
  • Payments for the technical component for certain pathology services

The ISMA appreciates the support of members who discussed the potential results of the 25 percent rate cut with their congressmen.
