ISMA’s annual Medical Mission Sponsorship, which grants up to $3,000 to a member engaged in a medical mission trip, was awarded for 2011 to Aileen Stiller, M.D., a LaPorte ob/gyn. Each year in November, a winner is selected at random from all entrants.
For nearly six years, Dr. Stiller has volunteered for medical mission trips in countries around the world. Last year, she worked with Doctors without Borders and provided medical care in Sri Lanka and Sudan.
In February, she will join a team through Faith in Practice for a week in Guatemala, where she visits every year.
“It’s something that gets in your blood,” she explained. “Medical missions are the most rewarding work of your professional life.”
Dr. Stiller said there are advantages to practicing medicine in Guatemala. “The people there have not had many medicines, so they aren’t allergic to them. That also means that antibiotics work the first time.”
Nominations for the 2012 award will be accepted starting Sept. 1, 2011. A recipient will again be selected by random drawing. Applicants must obtain the endorsement of their county medical society or alliance to be considered. Application letters should be forwarded to the ISMA.
To apply, include:
- Your name, address, e-mail and phone number
- Dates and location of proposed trip
- Information about other sponsors and/or mission coordinators
- Appropriate documentation, including expense details
