As one of only two team neurosurgeons on the field sidelines in the National Football League (NFL), Henry Feuer, M.D., received the 2010 Team Physician Award from the ISMA Commission on Sports Medicine. The award was presented during the Indiana Athletic Trainer’s Association banquet Oct. 31 in Indianapolis.
Dr. Feuer has worked with the Indianapolis Colts since 1984 and is a consultant for several Indiana colleges and universities. For 15 years, he served as a member of the NFL Committee on Concussions and assisted on the field sidelines for IU football games for nearly four decades. Dr. Feuer said his experience has made him a better physician.
“Serving on the sidelines is a real eye-opener,” he commented. “Everyone is watching when you examine a player. You have to make quick decisions. There is no time to sit in a conference room to figure things out.”
In addition, Dr. Feuer has worked with the Indianapolis 500, Brickyard 400 and F-1 Grand Prix.
“Dr. Feuer has truly been a pioneer in the treatment and care of head and neck injuries,” noted Purdue University’s athletic trainer Craig Voll, who nominated Dr. Feuer. “His impact has been immeasurable in the care of injured athletes across the state.”
After receiving his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Feuer completed his residency and internship from the IU School of Medicine.
The Team Physician Award is given to an ISMA member in good standing, who has 20 years experience as a team physician for an Indiana high school or organized sports team.
