Indiana moves closer to providing bonuses for EHR participation

Indiana can take another step forward in helping you obtain bonuses for participating in the electronic health record (EHR) incentive program.

The Indiana Family and Social Services Agency (FSSA) has received $2.31 million in federal matching funds that will enable the state to:

  • Create a plan defining the state’s vision for long-term HIT use
  • Promote interoperability and meaningful use of EHR technology statewide
  • Gather information on existing barriers to EHR use

The payment is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

“The money will help us get the infrastructure in place for those doctors who are eligible to adopt, implement, upgrade and meaningfully use EHR technology,” explained Andrew VanZee, Statewide Health IT Director for FSSA.

In July, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced final rules for “meaningful use” of electronic health records. That means you must demonstrate use of EHRs in ways that can improve quality, safety and effectiveness of care.

By meeting meaningful use criteria, you can qualify for incentive bonuses. Payments are $44,000 over a five-year period through Medicare and about $60,000 over six years for Medicaid. However, you can only qualify for one of the programs.
