Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, the HIPAA Standard Transaction will upgrade to a new version. This applies if you currently conduct electronic administrative transactions, such as checking a patient’s eligibility, filing a claim or receiving a remittance advice, either directly with a health plan payer or clearinghouse.
Now is the time to prepare for the new 5010 transaction to prevent future cash flow interruptions and disruptions in transaction processing. To help you, the AMA offers free online resources, which provide:
- Steps you need to take to prepare for 5010
- A checklist of things to do before the 2012 deadline
- Fact sheets to help you understand 5010 and how to test your readiness
Find these resources on the AMA web site.
In addition, publications and training materials about HIPAA and HITECH compliance are available through the AMA bookstore.
Also as a reminder, you should be implementing the ICD-10 code set now in order to meet the Oct. 1, 2013, compliance deadline. See this site for more information.
