Confused about your Medicare pay rate right now?

These are confusing times for Medicare physicians. However, the ISMA was advised the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is processing physician claims for services provided in June under the reduced payment rate – on a rolling, first in/first out basis.

Things got confusing when Congress failed to send legislation to President Obama in time to avert implementation of the scheduled 21 percent payment cut.

In contact with CMS officials, the AMA was informed that claims submitted earliest are now being paid at the reduced rate, while newer claims will continue to be held for a 10-day period until the president is able to sign legislation to change the reimbursement rate.

Whatever legislation is eventually passed is expected to apply retroactively to all services provided since June 1; claims already processed are expected to be adjusted automatically without any need to resubmit them.

The ISMA will send an e-mail Special Alert if the situation changes, or visit the ISMA website for updates.
