Convention resolutions determine ISMA priorities for the next year; talk to your delegate(s) and help direct the vote on 2015 resolutions Untitled document

The ISMA is a member-driven organization.

That means YOU and each dues-paying ISMA member can direct how the organization uses its resources. Resolutions adopted at convention each year determine priorities and actions for ISMA leadership and staff over the next 12 months.

What should the ISMA’s priorities be in the next year? Read the proposed 47 resolutions online. Then let your opinion be heard by contacting your delegate(s) or providing feedback through the online message board. Feedback on the resolutions will be shared with reference committee members.

As convention nears, you can refer to the ISMA convention website to see names of delegates from your county. Find contact information about your delegate in the ISMA member directory, which also is on the ISMA website. If you ARE a delegate, be sure to register for convention here.

All ISMA members – even nondelegates – are welcome to attend convention and address reference committees forming recommendations on each resolution. The reference committees meet Saturday, Sept. 12, starting at 7:30 am.

Leadership and CME at convention
The only constant is change. Many of us need to get used to this fact. Whether you feel like a victim of organizational change or view it as an opportunity likely depends on how well you understand the change process.

Offered Friday, Sept. 11, “CME – Change Management/Leadership” is a module in the ISMA’s new leadership series. The session at convention will introduce you to a change process that gives you a greater voice in how change is introduced and implemented. Plus, you will earn continuing medical education credit or a certificate through the new Indiana Center for Physician Excellence™.

Today, health care is undergoing massive change requiring physician leaders who can think strategically and manage in innovative ways to effect change in their organizations. Attend this executive-level program, led by Butler University faculty, to prepare yourself for effective leadership.

Events not to miss
Some schedule highlights for the 2015 convention promise to leave enjoyable memories and have people talking about the weekend.

ISMA leaders and delegates will be honored on Friday night with a keynote address by Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, MD, MBA, U.S. Surgeon General. “America’s Doctor,” who has friends among the ISMA leadership, will bring physicians in attendance a message about improving personal and public health.

Dr. Murthy, a clinician-educator, has cared for thousands of patients and trained hundreds of residents and medical students. He recently served as president of Doctors for America, a nonprofit comprised of more than 16,000 physicians and medical students who work to build a quality, affordable health care system for all.

During convention weekend, you’ll also hear a message from Congressman Larry Bucshon, MD, and see how our lndiana Rep. Tim Brown, MD, was honored by the AMA this year.

When the busy work of reference committees ends on Saturday, convention-goers will bring their appetites and their dancing shoes to the Presidents’ Night gala. The after-dinner action will include a DJ and dancing lessons from instructors with the Fred Astaire Dance Studio. You’ll be among our own “Stars,” but there won’t be any competition. Expect only exhilarating fun as you step onto the floor with ISMA President Heidi Dunniway, MD, who is sharing her own dance instructors with ISMA friends.

Many members, leaders and delegates are looking forward to another hour on Saturday, the Women in Medicine meeting. This popular group welcomes new attendees each year as they strengthen their bonds of friendship and share concerns and issues. Be sure to drop by from 3 to 4 pm, following the IMPAC Luncheon.

Also, the IMPAC Lounge will host special guests and encourage conversation between key events on Friday and Saturday. Stop in for networking and information about the ISMA political action committee – as well as refreshments.

As September nears, be sure to regularly check the ISMA Convention page for updates.
