A student in Sellersburg tested positive for tuberculosis (TB). At presstime, the Clark County Health Department, Floyd County Health Department and the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) were investigating.

The student, diagnosed May 28, had active TB symptoms, cavitary lesions on chest X-ray, acid-fast bacilli smear of >50 organisms/field, and tested positive for TB via polymerase chain reaction. This strain is susceptible to isoniazid and Rifampin. The patient is now isolated and responding well to treatment.

You are encouraged to ask about travel history and exposure to TB for patients with symptoms that include cough lasting several weeks, fatigue, fever, night sweats, chills and/or abnormal chest X-rays. Obtain sputum samples and send to your local health department.
