ICD-10: Steps to Prep Untitled document

This month, consider reviewing changes in your documentation requirements and educating your staff by looking at frequently used ICD-9 and new ICD-10 codes. As a resource, the 2015 CMS ICD-10-CM files can be downloaded at no cost. They contain information on the new diagnosis coding system.

Discuss staff training needs and determine the level of knowledge each staff member requires. Make sure they receive the appropriate training and then follow up with monthly updates/review sessions.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has tools to guide you to the appropriate training. CMS ICD-10 Implementation Guide for Small and Medium Practices includes:

  • Training Preparation and Needs Assessment on page 23
  • Training Topics, Purpose and Audience on page 25

For more information on ICD-10, see the education tab on the ISMA website. Visit this page often for specialty education and all the ICD-10 news.

CMS announced a national testing week for current direct submitters (providers and clearinghouses) March 2 to 6, 2015. Learn more on the ISMA website.
