The regular July 2014 payout from the Patient’s Compensation Fund (PCF) was $47,023,534.81, and the total number of claims paid was 58.

In contrast, last year at this time the PCF paid out $112,538,070 to cover the cost of 409 claims, including 342 stemming from malpractice cases against Mark Weinberger, M.D., of Merrillville.

The Weinberger cases depleted the fund, prompting a surcharge increase of 13 percent for coverage beginning April 1 of this year.

The good news is that the average payout went down for this period and the balance of $90,568,897.05 is better than projected by the Indiana Department of Insurance.
