Changes were made to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in January when final regulations under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act or HITECH were announced. The HIPAA Omnibus Rule takes effect soon – Sept. 23, 2013.
The changes impose new enforcement policies and stronger penalties. They also reflect new definitions of business associates and breaches, while imposing regulations on fundraising, marketing and the sale of protected health information.
