Spring is typically the time in odd-numbered years when medical and osteopathic physicians across Indiana renew their medical licenses. However, medical license renewal time is being permanently changed to Oct. 31. Controlled substance registration (CSR) renewals are also being moved to fall, giving you extra months on your 2013 license.

The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) will notify you about this change to the new Oct. 31 deadline, which will allow the agency to give greater support to new graduates. You need not take any action at this time.

This renewal cycle change is permanent, meaning every other year you will now renew your license and CSR between Sept. 1 and Oct. 31. You will receive an email notification when this year’s renewal cycle opens. Make sure the PLA has your email address.

Note that temporary medical permits (for residency and fellowships) are not affected by this change. They will continue to expire every year on June 30. Military physicians who have already renewed will keep their current licenses until Oct. 31, 2015.
