Caution on drug store physicals

Many local pharmacies – including Walgreens through its Take Care Health Services – are advertising spring sports physicals at bargain rates. Without the signature of a physician with an unlimited license to practice medicine, however, the physical will not be valid for Indiana high school students.

Policies of both the ISMA and the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) call for forms to be signed by a physician if the student is in high school. The requirement does not apply to middle or elementary school students.

The IHSAA’s Robert Faulkens advised, “We have notified school athletic directors to remind them about the requirement.” The IHSAA also has contacted Walgreens and CVS about the signature requirement
