Samuel Thompson, M.D., traveled to Ethiopia in February where he taught general surgery students about urology and provided clinical care. It was his third trip to Africa, but his first one with support of the ISMA’s Medical Mission Scholarship.
The Indianapolis urologist and his wife, Frances, worked with World Medical Mission in one of two hospitals in Soddo, Wolaita. The city has a population of approximately one million people and very few specialists to care for them.
“The majority of cases at the hospital were orthopaedic trauma and ob complications,” Dr. Thompson noted. “In the operating room, they had decent GU endocscopic equipment, so I was able to take the Ethiopian surgical chief resident through several TURPs (transurethral resection of the prostate). I also gave several didactic lectures to the residents covering urologic trauma and BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia).”

Frances assisted with English classes and taught a cooking class for the hospital’s dietary department.
Dr. Thompson noted the trips are very rewarding and bring needed help, not a handout, to a developing country.
“Medical mission trips will expand your horizon, stretch your capabilities and help you appreciate the advantages and disadvantage of medicine in the West and the rest of the world,” he said. “We want to thank the ISMA for helping make this trip possible.”
