2007 General Assembly ends

The 115th Session of the Indiana General Assembly adjourned sine die at midnight on Sunday, April 29, 2007. Between the House and the Senate, legislators filed more than 1,500 bills. By the end of the session, 137 of those bills were passed.

The ISMA Government Relations staff worked around the clock to ensure that physician and patient interests were protected. The staff is most pleased to report two key victories. HEA 1678 will not only provide the protection of health insurance to more of Indiana’s citizens, but also will deliver a long-needed increase in Medicaid provider reimbursement.

Our other legislative victories include bills to ban the use of “most favored nation” clauses, to increase the cigarette tax by .44 cents, to require all passengers in all vehicles to wear seat belts, and to ban insurers from denying payment based on a patient’s intoxication.

On behalf of all ISMA members, sincere appreciation is extended to Vidya Kora, M.D., ISMA president; Mike Mellinger, M.D., chair of the Commission on Legislation; David Welsh, M.D., chair of the ISMA Board of Trustees – and all members of the Commission on Legislation and Board of Trustees.

Many ISMA physicians testified and advocated on the issues. Thank you for your dedication to advancing the well being of patients and physicians during this Indiana General Assembly. Please see the May 14 ISMA Reports for a listing of those who contributed to a successful session.

Health care advocacy is not confined to the Statehouse. In the months ahead, the ISMA Government Relations staff will continue to work with lawmakers and state government officials, advocating for issues important to medicine. Please contact a member of the ISMA Government Relations staff at any time to discuss issues that concern you or to share your ideas for future legislative action.
