Professional Licensing

BILL:  SB 302 Professional and Occupational Licensing
AUTHOR: Sen. Ryan Mishler, R-Bremen
ISMA POSITION:  Support

THIS WEEK: SB 302 has not yet been scheduled for a hearing.

This bill establishes a provisional medical license for limited circumstances. It would allow the Medical Licensing Board (MLB) to issue a provisional license to an applicant who has:

  • Not practiced medicine or has not maintained continued competency, as determined by the MLB, for at least two years immediately preceding the filing of an application for an initial license. An example would be an ob/gyn who has practiced gynecology but not obstetrics and, therefore, has not maintained competency in that area.

  • Applied for reinstatement of a license that lapsed for at least three years. A physician who has opted to stay at home with her children for a period of time but now wishes to return to the practice of medicine would fall under this category.

The MLB initiated this bill to allow for an option less broad than an unlimited license to practice but not as restrictive as a probationary license.
