Program Instructors

Jeri Biedenkopf, RN, is a practice advisor at the ISMA. She works closely with AdminaStar Federal to resolve Medicare problems and serves as a member of the Provider Communications Advisory Group. She also is the commercial carrier liaison and ISMA’s representative on Anthem’ s Professional Provider Advisory Committee. Prior to joining the ISMA, Biedenkopf was assistant director of nursing at a local nursing home and for 16 years was practice manager for a specialty medical practice. She offers consulting services to medical offices in the areas of Medicare, patient relations and management.

Deborah J. Grider, CPC, CPC-H, CCS-P, is a Certified Professional Coder and a Certified Professional Coder-Hospital with the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), a Certified Coding Specialist-Physician with the American Health Information Management Association and a Certified Compliance Professional. Her background includes years of practical experience in reimbursement issues, procedural and diagnostic coding, and medical practice management. She is president-elect of the American Academy of Professional Coders. As president of Medical Professionals, Inc., Grider provides consulting and educational services nationally to medical practices, hospitals and professional associations. She authored “Principles of ICD-9-CM Coding,” first and second editions, “The Medical Record Chart Analyzer,” and “Coding with Modifiers” for the American Medical Association.

Barbara J. Hohenstein, RN, CCS-P, CPC, is a nationally recognized coding seminar leader. She has broad knowledge of medical billing and third-party reimbursement and serves as an expert witness for law firms defending providers. Hohenstein has been presenting health care-related seminars for physicians for the past 17 years. Hohenstein is president of Medical Management Resources, a practice management consulting firm. She is a certified coding specialist for physician-based practices and inpatient/outpatient by the American Health Information Management Association, and also is a certified coder through The American Academy of Professional Coders.

Morgan Hause, CCS, CCS-P , is the corporate billing director, compliance and HIPAA officer for Urology of Indiana, a group of 32 urologists and urogyenocologists in Central Indiana. He is a medical record technician and a certified coding specialist for both hospitals and physician offices through the American Health Information Management Association. Hause has over 20 years of experience in coding and previously was a consultant for Blue & Co, as well as a coding team leader for Community Hospitals Indianapolis. He has over eight years of experience in urology-specific coding and billing, and is a contributing editor for “Urology Coding Alert”.

Sandy Distler, CCS-P, practice advisor with the ISMA, began her career in health care working with independent practices and large accounts receivable management organizations. Her experience includes providing practice management and billing consulting as well as auditing services to independent practices. Recently, she managed accounts receivables in a large organization for a variety of specialties including oncology, radiology and thoracic surgery. She handled additional projects in the firm’s Software Implementation Department with responsibilities for giving system demonstrations to licensed clients, conducting pre-implementation assessments and providing post-implementation training. At the ISMA, Distler provides physicians with solutions to practice management concerns. A graduate of Indiana State University, she is certified by the American Health Information Management Association as a certified coding specialist – physician-based.

Kendra L. Conover, JD, is with the law firm Hall Render in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Dan Kelsey During his career, Kelsey has worked in a variety of capacities in the health care arena. Prior to coming to the ISMA, he spent 12 years in health care as a pharmacy technician, in a hospital business office, representative for the Indiana Medicaid program, and three years as a healthcare consultant with a CPA firm. In his current position as the Director of Practice Advisory Group and Membership Development, Kelsey is responsible for member recruitment, retention, and the development of services that will enhance physician’s involvement with the ISMA. As part of his duties, Kelsey also serves as the primary HIPAA contact for the ISMA membership.

He served as the privacy chair and chair for the Indiana HIPAA workgroup and is currently the immediate past chair for the workgroup. While assisting physicians with HIPAA compliance, Dan guided 30 practices (from solo practitioners to multi-physician specialty groups) in preparing for HIPAA privacy and provided numerous presentations to county medical societies, medical staffs, billing companies and practice managers.

Kelsey has an Associates degree from Purdue University at Indianapolis, a Bachelors degree from Indiana University at Indianapolis, and a Masters degree in Media Arts and Science from Indiana University at Indianapolis.
