Curriculum
The curriculum is designed to cover business functions in the office.
The locations and dates of the workshops vary from year to year but are always held in Indiana cities. MBS programs are identified by a diamond (♦) in the ISMA professional development catalog (pdf).
A general description of each workshop can be found in the introductory packet you will receive after enrolling in the MBS certification program.
Required workshops:
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Medical Terminology
- CPT Basic Training
- ICD-9-CM Basic Training
- Health Insurance 101
- Tools for Exceptional Patient Relations
- Collection Policies and Procedures
- Legal Guidelines for Medical Records
|
Electives workshops (choose 2):
- Intermediate CPT Coding
- Intermediate ICD-9-CM Coding
- The Nuts and Bolts of Medicare
- Medicaid Review
- OSHA for the Medical Office
|
The ISMA offers the workshops every year allowing enrollees to work toward certification at their own pace. Some individuals have completed the program within one year; others have taken the entire three years.
If after reading the description of the program, you realize you are already knowledgeable about a topic, you may choose to take the examination without attending the workshop. A $49 fee is charged for taking the exam.
