What happens after medical school?

All physicians, whether MDs or DOs, become house staff or residents at a teaching hospital to gain practical experience under supervision of skilled medical staff.

In their first year following medical school, these physicians are sometimes referred to as interns.

Physicians who select a specialty field will devote three or more years to hands-on advanced study and perhaps even more time in subspecialty training as fellows.
