Enforcing Nutrition on Our Teens: Are We Helping or Hurting?*
Friday, Sept. 16, 10 am - Noon
Presenter: Theresa Rohr-Kirchgraber, M.D., F.A.C.P., associate professor of Clinical Pediatrics and Medicine, IU School of Medicine, Division of Adolescent Medicine

Food is essential for life, but the manner in which we eat, the foods we eat and the way we eat can affect our health and our body’s response to disease. We will discuss the ways nutrition, or lack thereof, can affect the body and how it can be recognized in our patients. Current U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommendations and case reports will be reviewed.

The Healthy, Hunger Free-Kids Act of 2010 funds child nutrition and free lunch programs in schools. It also sets new nutrition standards for schools. Will the new rules encourage healthy eating or eating disorders?

One of the act’s goals is: “Promote health and reduce chronic disease risk through the consumption of healthful diets and achievement and maintenance of healthy body weights.” Information in this lecture for physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants will reflect these ideals and suggest how to achieve them.

Following this program, you should be able to:

  • Recognize the current recommendations from the USDA
  • Screen teen patients for nutritional deficiencies
  • Relate information on healthy lifestyles to patients and patient families

The ISMA designates this lecture for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.
Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Breast Cancer 2011: Raising the Bar For non-breast cancer providers*
Friday, Sept. 16, 10 am - Noon
Presenter: Robert J. Goulet, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S., board certified general surgeon specializing in breast disease and breast surgical oncology, Community Breast Care, Community Health Network, Indianapolis

This will be followed by an overview of changes in each of the specific areas of breast cancer care: screening, loco-regional therapy and systemic therapy. The session will conclude by correlating how these changes impact the practice of non-breast cancer providers including physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

Following this program, you should be able to:

  • List national infrastructural changes that enhance the quality of breast cancer care
  • Cite changes in the three specific areas of breast cancer care
  • Identify how these changes impact the practice of non-breast cancer providers

The ISMA designates this live presentation for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
