On Sunday, August 29, 2010 it was the Doc’s vs. the Suits softball game at Parkview Field Stadium! Game on!
The first pitch was thrown from the pitcher’s mound by Mayor Tom Henry. Local celebrity announcer, Charly Butcher announced the players and called the game! Local physicians suited up to play area businessmen in support of the IU School of Medicine, Fort Wayne Campus. Assistant Dean and Director, Fen-Lei Chang, MD, Ph.D., was on hand to welcome the hundreds of cheering fans, and present the MVP award to Dr. Jain, local gastroenterologist. Our very own Dr.Tom Kintanar sang the National Anthem beautifully, and his band (Dr. Paul Kaplanis, Dr. Mark O’Shaughnessy, Scott Page and Kent Snyder) played wonderful tunes for all to enjoy between innings and during the buffet dinner.
Dr. Basil “Billy” Genetos coached the Docs while Keith “Buss” Busse coached the Suits to victory 11 to 3! This fun, family event was enjoyed by all!
As the campus offers more opportunities for students, it is necessary to provide diagnostic and educational tools to prepare students for clinical training and practice. The proceeds from this softball game will be used to help with the implementation of the simulation educational program and to purchase additional diagnostic tools and instruments for clinical education.
In 2009, a beautiful new School of Medicine was dedicated in Fort Wayne. In June, 2009, a third year curriculum was added to the program: the fourth year curriculum has been added this year, and in 2011, the first class of students who completed all four years of their medical education in Fort Wayne will graduate. To date, over 350 physicians have received a quality medical education at this campus, many of whom have stayed in Indiana to practice medicine. You have enriched our communities by providing excellent compassionate care, and for that we are truly grateful.
This fundraiser was supported, in part, with grants from the Fort Wayne Medical Society Foundation, the Fort Wayne Medical Society Alliance, and the Indiana State Medical Association Alliance. Alliance members: Betty Canavati, fundraising co-chair and FWMS Alliance past president, Marianne Flueckiger, Adrienne Bond, and Cami Pond, ISMA Alliance state president, served on the planning committee and worked the event. The Alliance and medical community have assisted with many aspects of the program from supporting the students through scholarships all the way to providing snacks for them during exam weeks. The fundraiser is expected to raise in excess of $360,000 due to the very generous support of area businesses, sponsors and donations from both the business and the medical community. Thank you for your generosity.
